Everything on Beatport that I've gotten has been around 87 but on my computer it thinks half of them are 87 and the other half 174 (and other people online also say dnb has to be above 150) .

Dubstep is not 140 BPM. I don't know why that number gets thrown around, but most dubstep is from the 70's to 100, with most falling in-between 80 and 90. In many songs it's often for a double-time break to happen, at which point it will reach 140~200, respectively, but it shouldn't be timed that way. n_b. Screamers are usually 130-150 BPM.

However I thought DnB was characterized by it's notoriously fast break beat at 165-185 bpm?

Volume. In terms of volume, you want the drums to poke through fairly well, generally with the kick and snare sitting slightly above the rest of the drums. Heavier genres may have a much louder kick and snare to get that dancefloor energy. Secondly, the level of the bass should be fairly on par with the drums.
