Burlington House, not greatly altered, was to be taken for the Academy's offices, and galleries were to be built behind it, south of the London University building. (fn. 180) The plan thus had some resemblances to the earlier scheme for a new National Gallery behind Burlington House.

The original Burlington House was built on the present site of the Royal Academy c.1670 by Sir John Denham for Richard Boyle, 1st Earl.
